My thoughts on Jim Tressel

The NCAA rules need to change.  I hope all good comes out of the bad for Jim Tressel.  He loved and protected his players.  College sports mean lots of money for colleges and universities across the country.  In many cases the athletes are recruited out of their own academic and/or socio-economic milieu placed on these campuses where they must work very hard on the court; field; rink or in the gym. While they have to attend study tables to maintain a certain grade point and while they are heroes and help bring in money they aren’t having the same dating, dining, and dressing college experience as their peers.  Talk about unfair.  Maybe there needs to be a new pre-pro league that has nothing to do with college.  I am from out-of-town, did not attend The Ohio State University and come from a city where there were pro sports teams.  When I first moved here I couldn’t believe how big a deal it was.  Grown men travelling by private plane to watch the Buckeyes, but it is a big deal, means lots of money and nobody can fail to feel the thrill of Big 10 sports.   In Columbus, Ohio State’s athletics, academics and its contribution to the arts community are very important.  This is true in many places where there is a college population; this stuff is happening everywhere.  It happened in the 80’s while I attended Tulane University.  There was a point-shaving scandal involving athletes and their well-heeled friends. Coach Tressel is a fine human being and the NCAA should hire him to help revamp an antiquated system.  That is why there are boards and amendments.

One last thought is my memory of Coach Tressel bringing his freshman players to LifeTown and how charming and humble they were and the amount of time they took from their busy days to delight the kids.
