An evening of Sher-Bliss at the Kathryn Gallery

Sher-Bliss Wine & Chocolates co-hosted the Red Cross Tiffany Circle gathering recently held at the Kathryn Gallery in Columbus’ Short North.  The participants enjoyed a sampling of wines produced by some of my favorite female winemakers from around the world.

Whenever Sher-Bliss serves wine the chocolate and chocolate-infused food pairings abound.  The wines were

  • Elena Walch 2007 Pinot Grigio, Alto Adige, Italy
  • Carol Shelton 2008 Rendezvous Rose, Mendocino, California
  • Crios de Susana Balbo 2008 Cabernet, Mendoza, Argentina
  • Tres Sabores, 2007 Porque No?, Napa Valley, California

I chose these wines because I know and like them and the women who create them, with the exception of Susana whom I have not met.  Like me they love what they do and put forth a phenomenal product.  Keeping with my chocolate roots-we paired each wine with milk, dark and white chocolate, there was chocolate fondue for dessert and the savory food was spiked with chocolatey goodness.  Two of my favorite recipes worked particularly well with Carol’s Zin and Julie’s Porque No?.  These were the black bean burgers drizzled with a dark chocolate glaze served on cornbread pudding triangles and the the Indian-spiced roasted cauliflower with a milk chocolate BBQ sauce.   I enjoyed being a part of this successful event and meeting the women who support it.

That’s my pairing, please share yours…

The C.H.E.R. tasting-back by popular demand…

That’s California High-End Reds

This label buster tasting offers some of the best wines California (and Oregon) has to offer.  These are very small-production , beyond boutique and bordering on cult.  As most are huge wines, the flavors in the food pairings worked with the wines, but I see these as “enjoy by the fire reds”.

2006 Domaine Serene Pinot Noir Evenstad Reserve                         Willamette Valley, OR   $64.99

Domaine Serene produces some of the most sophisticated Pinots to come from the cool climate of Oregon’s Willamette Valley.  Last year it made the Spectator’s top 100 list and again the limited production and furious demand for it will make it a sell-out before the end of the year.

served with  mini pizzas, whole wheat crust brushed with hoisin sauce and topped with sauteed chicken, spinach, red peppers, mozzarella and green onions Self

2006 Ramey Cabernet Sauvignon Larkmead Vineyard                                         Napa Valley   $76.99

David Ramey has been at the forefront of California wine-making for years.  After completely transforming Chalk Hill and Spottswoode into household names he began to craft his own wines from some of the best vineyards in Napa and Sonoma. His Cabs (and Chards) are big, luxurious and well-balanced.  He discovered the Larkmead vineyard while working at Rudd and recognized its potential.  On its third bottling, it has received no less than 91 points and up to 95  from the Wine Advocate each year.  I once  attended a trade-tasting/seminar Dave conducted on his whites and besides the education , the wines are spectacular.  I may even be a bigger fan of the whites.

2006 Caldwell Vineyards Rocket Science                                                                             Napa Valley   $49.99

From one of the most important men in the history of Napa Valley winemaking.  Caldwell’s vineyards provides grapes to many prestigious wineries-Pahlmeyer, Phelps, Neiman and Viader.  More importantly, the vines John Caldwell smuggled (uh huh!) into the country from France are the origin of the specific clones of Cab, Cab Franc and Merlot that are still planted through out the Napa Valley today.  This proprietary blend of 7 varietals is robust and tastes out of this world.

Food served with the above two monster red wines, chocolate-rubbed steak-a little citrus and cocoa are always a hit, with steak served medium.  Alongside- creamy and rich gratins of leeks and roquefort.  Delicious!

2006 Crocker & Starr Cabernet Sauvignon Stone Place                                St. Helena, Napa       $96.99

One of the most exciting and sought-after wines coming out of California today.  From a ghost winery-opened before prohibiton and left to ruin.  The Crocker Estate is a special site with a unique set of soils containing all the best features of the surrounding appellations.  Winemaker Pam Starr adds this to her resume along with names like Sonoma-Cutrer and Spottswoode.

2007 Lewis Cellars Napa Valley Syrah                                                                                  Napa Valley   $76.99

Just 6  Bottles left of this smooth and elegant Napa Syrah.  Former racecar driver Randy Lewis produces some of the finest wines Napa has to offer.  very limited production and a real show-stopper.

Platters of Sher-Bliss’ signature Bunches of Bliss (chocolate-covered grapes) and hand-dipped strawberries were  enjoyed with the final two wines.

Oh what a night!  Those are my pairings, please tell me yours!
